This page contains illustrations from children's magazines and books from 1870 to 1930 -- from Kate Greenaway to Norman Rockwell to lesser known artists. To gain a sense of immediacy -- of what children in each era saw -- I turned to the foremost children's magazine of its day: St. Nicholas Magazine. Many popular classics were first serialized in its pages (including Alcott's Eight Cousins and Kipling's "Just So" Stories"). Here, then, is children's art as children enjoyed it.
